2. The Savoy, London

The Savoy in London is rumoured to have a mysterious lift that is operated by a ghost of a young girl who was killed in the hotel. Guests have reported ghostly happenings recurring on the fifth floor, according to The Telegraph.

3. The Mermaid Inn, Rye, Sussex

This inn is one of the oldest in southeast England. The hotel was rebuilt in the 1420s but maintains the original cellars that were constructed in 1156. Between 1730 and 1740 the inn was used as a stronghold for the notorious band of smugglers known as the Hawkhurst Gang. According to legend, five of the smugglers and their mistresses haunt the grounds.

This castle turned hotel and golf destination was once home to the Earl of Moray and has a dismal history behind it. In hopes of proving it was not actually haunted, a local minister stayed the night in the castle. He, instead, met his demise on that night with witnesses saying his room had been ransacked and the minister had fallen to his death.

5. Airth Castle, near Stirling

The 14th-century Airth Castle near Stirling, Scotland, is now a hotel and spa. Guests and staff have reported hearing children playing in rooms 3, 9, and 23 when the rooms were empty, thought to be ghosts of children who died in a fire with their nanny. People have also said they have seen the ghost of a dog roaming the halls which will nip at your ankles if you are unlucky enough, writes The Scotsman.

6. The Ettington Park hotel, Stratford-upon-Avon

The hotel's most-seen ghost is that of a woman in a white dress who roams the halls and disappears through walls. She is known as the ghost of "Lady Emma", a former governess. A ghost known as the grey lady is also seen regularly floating to the bottom of the stairs where she is said to have fallen to her death. Other apparitions of a man and his dog, a monk, an army officer, and two boys are believed to haunt the hotel.

7. Dalhousie Castle, near Edinburgh

This exclusive hotel is said to be haunted by the ghost of Lady Catherine of Dalhousie, who has been seen roaming the grounds (mostly near the dungeons). She was the daughter of the previous owners and died when she starved herself in retaliation when her parents forbid her from seeing the stable hand she loved.

8. The Ragged Cot Inn, Gloucestershire

Guests have heard strange sounds while staying at the inn. It is said that a drunken man pushed his wife and child down the stairs when she attempted to stop him from robbing a coach. When returning home from the robbery he found his wife and child dead and, out of fear, placed them in a trunk. Theirs are the three ghosts that supposedly haunt the inn.

9. Chillingham Castle, Northumberland

As one of the most haunted castles in England, Chillingham Castle is home to the "blue boy" who has been seen as a blue orb hovering above guest's beds and is also thought to haunt the so-called Pink Room, writes The Telegraph. The ghost of Lady Mary Berkeley is also seen around the castle and guests have claimed to have faintly hear her. The castle is also thought to be haunted by the ghosts of the victims of torturer John Sage, whose chamber remains in the castle.

10. Schooner Hotel, Northumberland

According to the Poltergeist Society of Great Britain, the Schooner Hotel has been named the most haunted hotel in the country with over 3,000 sightings and 60 individual apparitions, according to Express.co.uk. Guests have heard whispers and screams coming from rooms 28, 29, and 30. The ghost of a solider who walks the corridors is a frequent sighting by guests, as well as a maid who haunts the stairs.

11. The Skirrid Inn, Monmouthshire, South Wales

The Skirrid Inn has been in operation as a free house since 1110 and has a lot of history behind it. One ghost said to haunt it is that of Judge Jeffreys, known as the hanging judge, who ordered many executions when the inn was used as a courthouse during the rebellion. Guests have reported seeing glasses flying off shelves and the sounds of a woman's dress ruffling, as well as the feeling of being strangled.
